Usain Bolt’s Commonwealth Games win draws more than 8m UK viewers

Men’s 4x100m relay final, in which England took the silver medal, attracts audience of the Games to BBC1

Usain Bolt’s triumphant final leg for the Jamaican 100m relay team handed BBC1 its biggest audience of the Commonwealth Games with more than 8 million viewers.

The men’s 4x100m relay final, in which England took the silver medal, drew 8.4 million viewers between 9.20pm and 9.25pm on Saturday.

Tom Daley delivered the biggest audience for sister channel BBC3, with a peak of 1.8 million viewers watching the Olympic bronze medallist take gold in the men’s 10m platform diving a little earlier on Saturday, between 8.55pm and 9pm.

Sunday night’s closing ceremony was pulled in 6.8 million viewers, a 34.2% share between 9pm and 11pm, after an hour-long review of the Games which drew 5.1 million viewers (25.0%) between 8pm and 9pm.

It followed Saturday night’s main games programme, which averaged 5.4 million viewers (28.6%) between 7pm and 10.20pm.

ITV put through the mill

With the Commonwealth Games taking up the lion’s share of the BBC1 schedule throughout the day, ITV saw its all-day share of the audience slump to just 8.3%, a third of BBC1’s 26%.

ITV’s most-watched programme on Sunday was a Catchphrase repeat, which had 2.8 million viewers (15.6%) between 7.15pm and 8pm.

Elsewhere, the third episode of Channel 4 drama The Mill had 1.5 million viewers (7.2%) between 8pm and 9pm. At the same time on BBC2, business show Dragons’ Den pulled in 2.4 million viewers (11.6%), tied with ITV’s Foyle’s War repeat, which also drew1 2.4 million (11.1%0 between 8pm and 10pm.

Wrong note?

Channel 4’s new Alan Carr talent show, The Singer Takes It All, began with 1.2 million viewers, a 5.7% share, between 9pm and 10pm on Friday, down 42% on the channel’s slot average over the last three months.

The hi-tech game show, in which viewers voted for singers with an app, lost out to BBC2’s The Secret History of Our Streets, which drew 1.4 million viewers, a 7% share, also between 9pm and 10pm.

Channel 4’s The Last Leg was back with 1 million viewers (5.9%) between 10pm and 10.50pm.
