I’m black and my hair is natural. Get over it

As a petition calling for Beyoncé to comb her daughter’s hair showed, people can’t resist having their say

As a black woman with natural hair, I’ve come to expect fascination, ignorance and sometimes insensitivity about my appearance from people outside the black community. Comments such as “your hair is messy/crazy/wild today”, “you look like a sheep/brillo pad” and “your hair gets in the way” are frequently part of natural life. What I’m less ready to tolerate is criticism of natural hair from other black people.

Sometimes the criticism is subtle, such as dirty looks in the street from other black girls wearing their hair in weaves. Other times it’s from those closer to home. I have friends whose family members have repeatedly asked: “what are you doing with your hair?”

Detroit Love, Swedish Style

VASTERAS, SWEDEN — It was the evening of July 3, and a phalanx of American steel was arriving in this town an hour or so northwest of Stockholm.

Pontiacs, Fords, Plymouths, Cadillacs, Chevrolets — pretty much every brand of car ever manufactured on American soil — bumper to bumper into the fading daylight. Most were pristine, with immaculate chrome and gleaming paint, but some were custom hot rods in candy colors, and a few were wrecks that looked as if they had just been pulled from the ocean floor.

Banlieue chic designers take Paris back from the tourists

Fashionistas from the roughest areas in the French capital are spawning a new wave of tyrannical style to claim back their city

Amid the boutiques in Le Marais, the heartland of what the French call "bobo" (bourgeois-bohème) Paris, Andrea Crews' shopfront stands out: mannequins with bumbags strapped across their chests, tracksuit bottoms, trainers and heavy gold chains. This hip Parisian urban label has named the collection "Caillera au grand coeur", which translates to "thug with a big heart". The slang term typically reverses the word "racaille" or "scum", which has found favour with rightwing politicos eager to knock the younger multiracial generation in rundown council estates, especially in the much-maligned suburbs, known as banlieues.

10 ways to break into the fashion industry in Toronto

Breaking into the fashion industry in Toronto is a lot tougher than it sounds. We may not be New York or Milan, but ask any fashion student, blogger, designer, or photographer, and they'll all tell you the same thing: that it's nearly impossible to make it as an unknown talent.

Luckily, multiple international (and local) fashion groups have settled in to Toronto, laying the foundation for T.O. to become a fashion hotbed, and they're all looking to find, reward, and nurture fresh talent. These resources are available for the budding fashionistas, the design hopefuls, the aspiring stylists, the business-minded clothing aficionados, and all those dreaming of runways and showrooms.

Mirror, Mirror: Summer fashion transition: White'll work

Summer may be on its way out, but you should let your summer whites - especially the flimsy cotton frocks, skinny jeans, and warm-weather-only pumps - hang around.

White's power move to the brisk weather makes complete fashion sense at a time when the stylish ignore staid style rules. No white after Labor Day? Yeah, whatev.

Also, today's trendsetters are happiest when mixing the silky with the furry, the striped with the printed, and the zippered moto with the floral and flowy. No wonder summer whites are itching to break out of their beachfront jail.

How mobile phones became fashion items

I'm a bit slow-minded sometimes, but I'm beginning to wake up to what's happening to technology, right in front of our eyes.

It used to be something driven by engineers in laboratories, working on innovations that might take years to be turned into practical applications - the way that Teflon was a household by-product of the race to the moon.

But look what's happened now. Tech has become another fashion item, and many parts of the technology industry are now morphing into something with the expectations and rhythms of the fashion catwalk.

Makeup artist Dick Smith was the creator of unforgettable film faces

Dick Smith – who made flesh peel from famous actors’ faces, who made the young old and the beautiful hideous and who transformed a girl into a possessed tween – all while working as one of film and television’s most original and accomplished makeup artists, died on July 30. He was 92.

Before computers claimed so much of the simulated gore and metamorphosis depicted in modern movie making, Mr. Smith did his work with plaster life masks, liquid foam latex and painstaking perfectionism.

The Scoop on Zoë Saldana's Makeup in Guardians of the Galaxy

The last time Zoë Saldana played an oddly colored space creature, her blue skin tone was entirely computer generated. Not this time around. To play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, Saldana sat in the makeup chair for five hours a day so that every square inch of her could be covered in green paint—and I mean every square inch. "The things that were coming out of my nose, my mouth, my..." she told David Letterman when she stopped by his show last week. Well, since we now know what happened when she took the makeup off, here are all the details of how she got it on—directly from the special-effects makeup designer for the film, David George.

Perth makeup artist to the stars reveals tips for a flawless face

People working in television news are often asked two things – whether the presenters wear pants under the news desk (most of the time, they do) and how thick the makeup has to be.

Reporters out ‘on the road’ usually do their own makeup, but those who face the glare of the studio lights each night have their visage taken care of by a dedicated makeup artist. At the local studios of Channel Ten and ABC, that person is Vicki Schultz.

60s makeup makes a selfie comeback

London - When it first hit the shelves in the Sixties, it claimed to offer women a lasting glow without turning their faces “muddy”.

Now Corn Silk face powder is making a comeback, supposedly because it leaves women with a “selfie-friendly” finish.

The old-fashioned product costs just £6.72 (about R200), and is currently number two on Amazon’s list of best-selling face powders. According to make-up artist Aimee Adams, this is because it gives women a muted glow, similar to the flattering soft-focus filters on the photo-sharing website Instagram.

Paper make-up, the ultimate beauty note

Is it a book, is it a blotter is it a post-it? Actually it's a foundation, blusher or highlighter papier say Mia Cosmetics

We love a gimmick in beauty - even if we know it's just that, a gimmick (anyone still using their vibrating mascara by the way?). But as someone who doesn't leave home without a blotting paper (the best by the way, are by MAC Cosmetics and Paul & Joe) the new papiers from Mai Couture might just stick.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Painful Take on Beauty

If someone told you that you could conquer wrinkles and age spots with a quick, non-invasive procedure that was “quite painful, like having your face smacked with a rubber band that has an electric shock in it,” would you? That’s how Gwyneth Paltrow describes Thermage, a laser treatment that tightens and smooths skin, without breaking it, keeping it firmly outside the realm of plastic surgery. On top of the initial pain, Thermage and other lasers cause side effects like redness, swelling, and blistering; some patients can actually get burned. Which brings up the question, why do women continue to endure such pain in the name of beauty? Is it really worth it?

Observations with Richard Beecham: A needle in the face – and other beauty tips

I think I’d like to get more botox,” she said, delicately gesturing to her forehead. “It’s all getting a bit loose again.”

This was a comment not from a former trophy wife in her 50s, or a nipple-pierced divorcee dad grappling with a midlife crisis, but a friend of a friend in her late 20s.

Sensing an opportunity for humour, I aggressively stretched my facial skin back with my hands, and asked: “How do you think I’d look?”

The hotel that threatened to fine for bad reviews

Union Street Guest House, a self-described "historic" hotel in New York's Hudson River Valley, is testing the proposition that all press is good press. After the hotel threatened to fine a wedding party $500 for each negative online guest review, the Internet unleashed a torrent of outraged, one-star reviews on the inn's Yelp page.

The specific language in the hotel's terms — outlining how the $500 fines would be withheld from the wedding party's security deposit until the negative reviews were taken down — has since been removed and the hotel is quickly backtracking. "The policy regarding wedding fines was put on our site as a tongue-in-cheek response to a wedding many years ago," the hotel said in a statement. "It was meant to be taken down long ago and certainly was never enforced."
