The best make-up and skincare products go under the Fashion Team's microscope. This week: anti-ageing shampoo
It's not just our skin that we need to keep an eye on - our hair is ageing just as fast. Jane Barnett, hair and scalp specialist at Kérastase, says: "As we age, cell metabolism and regeneration slows and our hair loses colour and density." Environmental factors also contribute. "Exposure to the elements, or styling habits that cause stress and damage, cause premature ageing." We tested the new wave of products.
This is designed for use sans conditioner, which gunks up the planet and doesn't do much for your hair. It had a pleasing consistency and professional smell. 8/10
Julien Farel Anti-Ageing Vitamin Restore , £28, selfridges.com
More of a treatment than a shampoo. My dry, curly hair felt silky soft and de-tangled after the first wash, but super-greasy after the second, so it's probably better to use it once a week. 5/10
Pantene Expert Collection AgeDefy Shampoo , £5.99, boots.com
My hair certainly felt super soft after its prescribed two minutes spent slathered in this shampoo. Unfortunately, a disturbing amount of it fell out afterwards. Scary. 2/10
Richard Ward Anti-Ageing Argan Shampoo , £5.99, waitrose.com
This felt thicker than normal shampoo and took time to lather, presumably due to the argan oil. It smelt great, and had a slightly volumising effect, but I'm not completely convinced. 6/10
Aveda Invati Exfoliating Shampoo , £22, aveda.co.uk
This cleanses, calms and hydrates the skin so that the hair grows readily, and falls out less frequently. After a few weeks my hair felt wonderful and my angry scalp was just as happy. 8/10
Alterna Caviar Anti-Ageing Volume Shampoo , £28.50, lookfantastic.com
Smelt great and made hair soft and smooth, but without any of the promised oomph. A good option to soften coarse locks, but it left my fine hair flat. 7/10
