Theatre review: The Flick, Red Stitch Actors Theatre

THE Flick’s namesake is a run-down, single-screen theatre in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The Friday night shift every week is manned by the same three people.

Film-obsessed Avery takes a job at The Flick for one reason: it’s an analog oasis in the middle of a digital revolution — one of the last cinemas in the state with a 35mm projector. Sam (Ben Prendergast) shows Avery (Kevin Hofbauer) the ropes, sweeping up popcorn and offering nuggets of wisdom about how best to clean the soda machine. As they make their way from row to row in the empty cinema, Avery turns to Sam: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” he asks. “I am grown up”, comes the reply. Sam’s 35, and they’re called dead-end jobs for a reason. Rose (Ngaire Dawn Fair), the green-haired projectionist, flits between sleepy-eyed indifference and unfiltered deadpan.

But the preparation necessary to transform into a tireless performer like Brown -- "the hardest working man in show business," after all -- was oddly reminiscent of working out on the baseball diamond.

"I was like, 'This is déjà vu,'" says Boseman. "I'm waking up in the morning and lacing them up. Doesn't matter whether it's cleats or if it's leather shoes."

A New Show About Doctors Of Old

ARUN RATH, HOST:

It's hard to imagine today, but before the 20th century, people who needed surgery were more likely to go to their barber than a hospital. Steven Soderbergh's new series on Cinemax called "The Knick" takes us right back to that time. It's set in the fictional New York City hospital, the Knickerbocker, in 1900. It's a dark, dirty, rather frightening place, and the doctors are not afraid to try new procedures.

The Leftovers recap: 'Guest'

Nora takes a bullet and finds hope from Holy Wayne
"In your opinion, do you believe the Departed is in a better place?" —Nora

Of all the damaged people in The Leftovers, Nora Durst is the only major character who actually lost someone close during the Rapture. In her case, it's made her a minor celebrity in Mapleton because she's the rare 1-in-128,000 case who lost her entire family—husband and two young children. What makes her even more unusual is that she now works for the government's Department of Sudden Departure, interviewing people like herself with an intrusive questionnaire before they can receive the government's generous payout for their loss. That she works for the government in such an official capacity was a surprise to me; when we first witnessed her at work, badgering the parents of a departee with Downs syndrome, I suspected that she was a fraud, callously freelancing in order to quell her own pain. After all, this is The Leftovers.

He’s accompanied by crew mates played by Anne Hathaway and Wes Bentley. Their goal is to pass through a wormhole that will allow them to leap through time and space to a new part of the universe light years from earth.
