London Zoo defends late parties

London Zoo has defended its late night openings where alcohol is served, after claims of guests throwing glass at animals, pouring beer over them and trying to climb into the enclosures.

Malcolm Fitzpatrick, deputy zoological director, told BBC London that animal welfare was the zoo's "highest priority", and he had not witnessed any behaviour that was harmful to the animals.

More than 24,000 people have signed a petition to stop Zoo Lates, which is claimed to have caused "fear and distress" to animals.

Westminster Council said it had asked for "a full report into what happened."
