Newcastle Emlyn hairdresser wins Make-up and Hair award at Portsmouth film festival

Emily Biggs, of Talking Heads Hair and Beauty in Newcastle Emlyn, has scooped the Make-up and Hair Award at Portsmouth film festival, after her work on a short independent film.

Emily was asked to style the hair for the whole cast in the independent film — The Eleventh Hour — by customer and friend Holly Kenyon.

Emily said: “I’m really chuffed about the award.

“It is a bit strange to me because people in West Wales do not often get recognised for such awards, said Emily.

“Working on the film was an amazing experience, I had a really good time. The reaction from local people has been really positive.

“A lot of people have been coming into the hairdressers to congratulate me, which has been lovely.”

Emily worked on the film in Nottingham Trent College in 2012 and heard she was nominated for the award three months ago along with five other independent short films.

The film’s prodcuer Holly Kenyon, who also starred in the film, said Emily thoroughly deserved the award for her recognition and talent.

She said: “Emily had never worked on a film set before when she arrived on set that first day, but she immediately rose to the challenge.

“The hair design for the film required some imaginative thinking, especially as regards one particular character, and Emily created the most amazing looks.”

Having enjoyed her experience working on one independent film, Emily is keen to work on other ones in the future. Emily will also be appearing on the daily magazine programme Heno, on S4C in the next couple of weeks.
