RFK Jr., Hines wed in Hyannisport

HYANNISPORT — Robert Kennedy Jr. and actress Cheryl Hines danced for the first time as husband and wife to a cover of "Make You Feel My Love" as members of the Kennedy and Shriver families, as well as a mix of public figures and actors, celebrated their union.

The couple was married Saturday evening at the home of Edward Kennedy Jr. on Irving Avenue.

The bride wore a white, strapless A-line dress and carried a bouquet of blue and ivory flowers. Guests could be heard cheering as the vows ended shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Among the guests were actor Larry David, who starred in "Curb Your Enthusiasm" with the bride, Seinfeld actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's former wife Joan Kennedy.

In his groom's toast, RFK Jr. said that when the couple first started dating, he asked David about the actress's character.

"What Larry said is, 'Bobby, she is one of the most solid people I have ever met in my life.'"

Several other Kennedys and Shrivers, as well as the bride's sister and best friend, toasted the couple.

The groom's brother, Max Kennedy, described their close relationship growing up. He said that his whole life, he followed in Bobby's footsteps.

"I went to Harvard because Bobby went to Harvard. I went to UVA because Bobby went to UVA. I became a prosecutor because Bobby was a prosecutor," he said. "He taught me everything I know about being a man."

The professional wedding photos were taken by Denis Reggie and will benefit the bride and groom's favorite charities, including United Cerebral Palsy where Hines is trustee.

Before some of the guests arrived at the Kennedy Compound by trolley, Hines' daughter, Catherine, 10, came walking down Irving Street with her cousin Zoe Hines, 11.

Cat, with a shining smile full of braces, said she was looking forward to spending time with all of her new cousins.

She wore a cocktail length dress with a white top and blue and white floral skirt.

Despite the rainy Saturday, there was a lot of activity taking place inside as workers prepared for the ceremony and nighttime reception.

"It's a ball of madness," Cat said.

Cheryl's nephew, Griffin Hines, said outside the venue that he was "very excited" about the wedding.

Most members of the Kennedy family arrived in cars or on the trollies, but made their entrance into the ceremony on foot.

However, mother of the groom Ethel Kennedy was driven onto the property in a black Audi and transported around the grounds in a golf cart.

A Montilio's Baking Company truck arrived shortly after 4 p.m. Jon Tague of A-1 Liquors said the company provided all of the liquor for the wedding, including Harpoon and Summer Shandy.

The scent of seafood and steak filled Irving Avenue, where a small group of spectators tried to sneak peeks of visiting celebrities.

This is the environmental activist's third marriage.

His second wife, Mary Richardson, committed suicide two years ago in her New York estate. The couple, who were in the middle of a divorce at the time of her death, had four children together.

The lawyer's two oldest children are from his first marriage to Emily Black, which ended in 1994.

After guests enjoyed a seafood dinner, an ice cream truck arrived at RFK Jr's home next door for the gaggle of children at the reception. Palio Pizzeria from Main Street in Hyannis also showed up delivering pies.
