Sony Hiring 'Bridesmaids' Director for Female 'Ghostbusters' Reboot

With as troubled and arduous the path to making Ghostbusters 3 has been for years now, the latest report about Sony Pictures reviving the paranormal comedy classic sounds like the best idea yet. Variety has word that Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig is currently being lined up by the studio to direct and produce a Ghostbusters reboot with a cast of female characters played be comedic actresses. However, that doesn't mean Ghostbsuters 3 is entirely dead as the trade notes, "It’s unclear whether another director will be chosen for that project or if this reboot will take its place." We hope the latter is the case.

As successful as all the female led films like The Hunger Games and Divergent have been lately, not to mention all the success Feig has had with his aforementioned female driven comedies, this is just a great idea. I'm already envisioning Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Ghostbusters suits, but there's plenty of other names who would be great like Emma Stone (who was previously rumored for a role in Ghostbusters 3), Rashida Jones, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Emily Blunt, Sandra Bullock, Brie Larson, Cobie Smulders, Lizzy Caplan, Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and probably many more I can't think of right now. Melissa McCarthy has been left out intentionally because we need a break after Tammy.

Honestly, with Harold Ramis dead and Bill Murray seemingly having no interest in the film, this seems like the best course of action. The question is whether the film has ties to the original franchise or if they decide just to be a complete reboot with no mythology whatsoever in play. One thing's for sure, this reboot won't be using the Ghostbusters 3 script, and a new screenplay will be written from scratch. That doesn't necessarily mean Dan Aykroyd or Ernie Hudson couldn't still have cameos, but it does seem to hint at a new film that doesn't exist in the same world as the original 1984 film. Anyway, Paul Feig has been retweeting people talking about this news, so it seems to be true. We'll just have to sit back and see how it all plays out. Sony should probably register the title Ghostbustiers just to be safe. Thoughts?
