Weird Al films at Riverside City College

Marching Tigers join the prince of parody for sports-themed romp, part of an eight-video binge.

Keeping anything under wraps in this age of social media is tough.

But when it involves a video spoof starring funnyman/singer “Weird Al” Yankovic and featuring the Riverside City College Marching Tigers band?

“It was so tough,” said Eileen Resendiz, who plays alto sax in the band. “I grew up with his videos so it was very, very hard to keep quiet.”

On Friday the gags came off. Literally.

“Sports Song,” a spoof of college fight songs featuring Weird Al marching across RCC’s Wheelock Field singing, “Your sports team is vastly inferior/that simple fact is plainly obvious to see” while the Marching Tigers back him up with a rousing beat, debuted on the Funny or Die website.

The video is the fifth entry in Weird Al’s #8videos8day campaign designed to publicize his new album “Mandatory Fun.” Each video and song is original

Marching Tigers band director Gary Locke said that by the time he logged on to Funny or Die on Friday morning, the song had 170,000 hits.

“This thing is blowing up. It’s through the roof,” Locke said. “My cellphone and laptop are blowing up.”

The Marching Tigers band is no stranger to the spotlight.

Known as “Hollywood’s Band,” the Marching Tigers have been featured in commercials, movies and music videos.

But working with Weird Al may have been the funniest experience for band members.

“We tried not to laugh so many times,” Resendiz said. “I had to look away so as not to laugh at his shenanigans.”

Locke said he received the call to work with Weird Al in February.

“I mentioned it to the band, and I was afraid I’d hear crickets,” Locke said. “But there was a gasp.”
