How to get hair like this for one night only

And how not to pay the consequences come Monday morning.

Just when you thought it was an overnight beauty sensation which would come and go as quickly as faking freckles (yes, that happened): coloured tresses are here to stay and the trend has gone into overdrive.

But, there are a few things you should know before attempting it, or risk turning Friday night’s lilac creation into Monday morning’s slightly grey, washed out mess.

To rival Nicole Ritchie’s all-over rich lilac locks from the Met Ball, Kevin Murphy, Hair Director of the namesake brand, suggests starting with a good base, “If you’ve got really dark hair you want to use something like a paste which [the colour] is going to grip onto”.

Murphy knows a thing or two about the trend, he created a similar effect for Myer’s spring/summer 14'/'15 fashion launch using Kevin Murphy Colour Bugs. “Put product in your hair, make the [colour] powder stick to the product and that way you’re not staining your hair. Especially if you’ve got bleached hair, it can sometimes grab,” says Murphy.

But how do you ensure you’re not flaunting a washed out version of the trend for days to come? Washing with a good conditioner is key. “Jump in the shower, put a bit of conditioner on and it will be gone,” says Murphy.
And it’s as easy as that.
