‘Late Show’ to continue filming in New York City after Letterman’s departure

Despite Letterman’s departure, CBS’ ‘Late Show’ will continue to film in New York.

While CBS’ Late Show will be changing hosts in 2015, the network and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that its location will remain the same.

“I am pleased to announce that the ‘Late Show’ will stay in New York, where it belongs,” stated Cuomo. “As David Letterman passes the baton to Stephen Colbert, I look forward to watching ‘The Late Show’ from the historic Ed Sullivan Theater for years to come.”

The Late Show with David Letterman has filmed in New York City for the past 21 years, but when Letterman announced his retirement plans on April 3, fans were concerned that his departure would lead to a relocation. However, that will not be the case.

“We’re thrilled to continue broadcasting CBS’s ‘Late Show’ from New York and call the Ed Sullivan Theater its home,” stated Leslie Moonves, CBS’ President and CEO. “We’re excited to be here in late night for many years to come.”

The deal to stay in New York, which helps ensure the 200 jobs related to the show will stay in the city, makes CBS eligible to receive at least $11 million in tax credits. Additionally, a $5 million grant from Empire State Development will help offset renovations at the Ed Sullivan Theater.

Stephen Colbert will leave Comedy Central’s The Colbert Reportat the end of this year, in order to take over the Late Show sometime in 2015. Earlier this year, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti asked CBS to bring Late Show to L.A. to counterbalance the loss of The Tonight Show to New York. Colbert, who has been a longtime resident of New Jersey with his wife and three children, will undoubtedly be happy to hear that CBS ignored Garcetti’s request.
