(Review) Guardians of the Galaxy

THIS is yet another epic adventure from Marvel Studios based on one of its comicbook series.
Like all the movies it has been producing, Guardians of the Galaxy has enough action, comedy, visual effects and whimsy to keep the audience glued to the seats for a little more than two hours.

The story revolves around Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who was kidnapped by an alien ship soon after the death of his mother.

Years later, Peter is shown trying to steal a mysterious orb that many parties seem to want to get their hands on, especially his one-time boss Yondu (Michael Rooker) who has a buyer lined up.

Peter finds out that a nasty despot called Ronan (Lee Pace) – who has a penchant of destroying planets and their occupants – wants the orb for himself.

While trying to sell the orb, Peter gets into a skirmish with Ronan’s henchwoman Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and bounty hunters Rocket – a genetically-altered raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) – and his bodyguard, a tree-like humanoid named Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).

All four subsequently end up in prison where they meet Drax (Dave Bautista), who tries to kill Gamora to avenge his family who were murdered by Ronan.

Somehow, these five misfits form an uneasy alliance to escape prison but circumstances force them to take on Ronan and put a stop to his tyranny.

The movie has top Hollywood actors Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, Glenn Close and John C. Riley who have been cast in small but pivotal roles.

However, the movie isn’t about them. It’s the unlikely alliance of these heroes who keep you riveted throughout the film.

Some things don’t make sense such as Peter’s Walkman and mixed tape cassette (given by his mother) which still works well decades later.

Nonetheless, director Tim Gunn has given us an engaging story that will keep you entertained throughout. A sequel to this has already been approved by the studio.
